What is an eScript?

An eScript is a digital version of a paper prescription. These are safe and convenient alternatives to paper prescriptions. Paper prescriptions are still valid and accepted in pharmacies -  the digital version and escript is simply an alternative.

When you go to your healthcare professional you have the choice of requesting an escript or getting a paper script given to you. Most pharmacies are set up to accept electronic prescriptions

How do eScripts work?

eScripts work the same way as paper prescriptions - the only difference is that they are prescribed digitally, often sent to you via email or by text message.

During your doctor's appointment you will get a choice to receive an electronic prescription via SMS or email, or you can choose the paper option.

The SMS or email you receive will contain a link to a ‘token’ which has all the details of the prescription you require. If at the doctor's appointment you need for example three different prescription items - you will receive a separate token for each medication you are prescribed.

Always ensure to check you have received your tokens before you finish your consultation.

Getting your medicine from the pharmacy

Visit the pharmacy of your choice or go to the pharmacy website and present your token as per their requirements. In physical stores, the pharmacy can just simply scan your token.

For online stores, you can usually enter in your token number. Following this you will get your medication alongside any professional advice you require. .

What are the benefits of eScripts?

  • Benefit 1: Safe and easy to store. No need to worry about losing your paper prescriptions
  • Benefit 2: Faster and convenient, you can send it to the pharmacy ahead of time. No waiting in line!
  • Benefit 3: Improve patient safety , by reducing risk of transcription errors and reducing spread of germs whilst you are sick in the community.

How can you get an eScript?

An eScript can only be issued by a prescribing health care practitioner. When issued, it can be sent to you via an SMS or email to your mobile device, depending on your preference.

eScripts vs Paper Prescriptions

As with everything, there are advantages and disadvantages to both eScripts and paper scripts. Here is a simple table comparison, but please speak to your healthcare professional to see what option would be best suited for you.

eScripts

  • No lost paper scripts
  • Script in form of text or email
  • Support telehealth services (no need to physically visit the doctor to pick up your script)
  • Environmentally friendly

Paper Scripts

  • Need to file scripts to avoid losing them
  • If using telehealth, need to organise a way to get the script posted to you or the pharmacy
  • Need to leave the comfort of your home to pick up the paper script from doctor/pharmacy

What can I get prescribed with an eScript?

Anything you would get prescribed as a paper script you can get prescribed as an eScript. There are no exemptions for electronic scripts.

Summary

All in all, in today’s day and age with all the technological advancements, it is important to stay abreast of the latest things that can make our day to day lives easier, eScripts is one of those things.
